Awareness of stardom (1973–1974)
Bachchan struggled, seen as a "failed newborn" who, at 30, had twelve flops and only two hits (as a Bombay lead in Goa and supporting the role of Anand ). Bachchan was soon discovered by screenwriter duo Salim-Javed , starring Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar . [35] Salim Khan wrote the story, screenplay and script of Zanjeer (1973), and conceived the "angry young" persona in the lead role. Javed Akhtar came on board as co-writer, [36] and Prakash Mehra, who saw the script as potentially groundbreaking, said the film's director. However, they struggled to find an actor for the lead "angry young man" role; it has been moved by a number of actors, in this case against the "romantic hero" image that dominated the industry of the time. [35] Salim-Javed soon discovered Bachchan and "saw his talent, which many did not. He was amazing, a genius actor in bad films." [37] According to Salim Khan, they "strongly felt that Amitabh was the ideal rejection of Zanjeer ". [35] Salim Khan introduced Bachchan to Prakash Mehra, [36] and Salim-Javed insisted that Bachchan be transferred for the role. [35]
Zanjeer was a crime film with violent actions , [35] contrary to the romantically themed films that before, and it established Amitabh in a new persona - the "angry young man" in Bollywood cinema. [38] He got the first Filmfare Award nomination for Best Actor , the Filmfare later regarded as one of the more iconic performances in the history of Bollywood. [34] The film was a huge success and one of the highest grossing films of the year, breaking Bachchan's dry spell at the box office and turning it into a star. [39] This was the first of many collaborations between Salim-Javed and Amitabh Bachchan; Salim-Javed wrote most of their successive Bachchan-minded scripts for the lead role, and forced him to drop for their later films, including blockbusters like Deewaar (1975) and Sholay (1975). [37] Salim Khan also introduced Bachchan to director Manmohan Desai that he formed a long and successful association, along with Prakash Mehra and Yash Chopra . [36] Eventually, Bachchan became one of the most successful leading men in the film industry. Bachchan's portrayal of the wrong hero who fought in a crooked system and the circumstances of the elimination of films like Zanjeer , Deeewar , Trishul , Kaala Patthar , Shakti , came with it most of the time, most notably young people who create a depressing state of social anxiety such as poverty , hunger , unemployment , corruption , social injustice and the brutality of The Emergency . It led to Bachchan's so-called "angry youth", a catchphrase journalism that became a metaphor for bitter anger, resentment, frustration, rebellion and the illusion of anti-establishment in a whole generation, as usual in 1970 in India. [40] [41] [42] [43]
It was also 1973 when he married Jaya, and during this time they appeared in many films together: not just Zanjeer but in films such as Abhimaan , which was released just a month later. at their wedding and also succeeded at the box office. Later, Bachchan played the role of Vikram, once again with Rajesh Khanna, in the film Namak Haraam , a social play directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee and scripted by Biresh Chatterjee that deals with the themes of friendship. Her supporting role won her second Filmfare Best Supporting Actor award.
In 1974, Bachchan made numerous guest appearances in films such as Kunwara Baap and Dost , before playing a supporting role in Roti Kapda Aur Makā . The film, directed and written by Manoj Kumar , deals with themes of honesty in the face of oppression and financial and emotional hardship, and was the lead film of 1974. Then Bachchan played a leading role in film Majboor . The film was a box office success. [44]

The damage coolie (1982-1983)
On July 26, 1982, while working for Coolie , at the University Campus in Bangalore, Bachchan suffered a severe intestinal injury while filming a fight scene with fellow actor Puneet Issar . [59] Bachchan made his own movie plays and a scene required him to fall to a table and then to the ground. However, as he jumped onto the table, the corner of the table hit his stomach, resulting in a splenic rupture from which he lost a lot of blood. He needed an emergency splenectomyand remained critical of the hospital for months, sometimes dying. His most public response included prayers at the temples and offers at the sacrifice of arms to save him, while later, there were long queues for fans outside the hospital where he was again. [60]
However, he resumed filming later in the year after a long time. The film was released in 1983, and in part due to the huge publicity in the Bachchan accident, the film was a box office success and top-grossing film of the year. [61]
The director, Manmohan Desai , changed Coolie's termination following Bachchan's accident. Bachchan's character was originally intended to be executed but after the script was changed, the character came to life. It is not appropriate, says Desai, for the person facing death in real life killed inside. Likewise, in the released film the footage of the fight in the adventure has changed at a critical moment, and a caption has appeared onscreen marking this immediate injury to the actor and the aftermath of the publicity of the accident. [62]
Shortly after, he was diagnosed with Myasthenia gravis . His illness made him mentally and physically weak and he decided to quit the movies and pursue politics. During this time he became a pessimist, expressing concern over how a new film would be received, and recounting before each release, "Yeh to flop hogi!" ("This movie works") [63]
