    Early life and family

Bachchan was born in  Allahabad  . [16]  His ancestors on his father's side came from a village called  Babupatti  , in Raniganj tehsil,  Pratapgarh district  , in the present state of  Uttar Pradesh  , in  India  . [17] Her mother,  Teji Bachchan  , was a social activist and a  Punjabi  Sikh  woman from  Lyallpur  ,  Punjab  ,  British India  (present-day  Faisalabad  ,  Punjab  ,  Pakistan  ). [18] His father Harivansh Rai Bachchan  a  Hindi poet   writes  Kayastha  Hindu  ,  excellent  also relevant  Hindustani dialects  Awadhi  [18] and  Urdu  . [19]
Bachchan first  referred to Inquilaab  , inspired by the phrase  Inquilab Zindabad  (which is translated by the English as "Long live the revolution") used during   the  Indian independence struggle   . However, at the suggestion of fellow poet  Sumitranandan Pant  , Harivansh Rai changed the name of the boy to Amitabh, which, according to an  article  in  The Times of India  , means "the light that never dies". [20]  [a]  Although his surname is  Shrivastava , Amitabh's father adopted the pen name Bachchan ("like a child" in colloquial Hindi), where he wrote all his works. [21] With this last name Amitabh debuted in films and for all other practical purposes, Bachchan became a surname for all of his immediate family. [22]  Bachchan's father died in 2003, and his mother in 2007.  [23]
Bachchan is an alumnus of  Sherwood College  ,  Nainital  . He later attended  Kirori Mal College  ,  University of Delhi  . [24] He had a younger brother, Ajitabh. Her mother had a keen interest in theater and was offered a part in a film role, but she liked her duties at home. Teji had some influence in the career choice of Amitabh Bachchan because he had always insisted that "he had to step on stage". [25]
She is married to actress  Jaya Bhaduri  . [26]

    Career in acting

    Early career (1969–1972)

Bachchan made his film debut in 1969, as a voice-over speaker of  the  National Award  by  Mrinal Sen  -winning film  Bhuvan Shome  . [27]  His first acting role was as one of the seven protagonists in the film  Saat Hindustani  ,  [28]  directed by  Khwaja Ahmad Abbas  and  starring Utpal Dutt  ,  Anwar Ali  (brother of comedian  Mehmood  ),  Madhu  and  Jalal Agha . [29]  [30]
Anand  (1971) follows , starring Bachchan alongside Rajesh Khanna. Her role as a doctor with a memorable look at life earned Bachchan her first Filmfare  Best Supporting Actor award  . He immediately followed up his first antagonist role as a sympathetic lover-turn-murderer in  Parwana  (1971). Following Parwana there are many films including  Reshma Aur Shera  (1971). During this time, he made a guest appearance in the movie  Guddi  starring his future wife Jaya Bhaduri. He told about the movie  Bawarchi  . In 1972 he appeared in the  Bombay action comedy in Goa  directed by  S. Ramanathan  with great success. [31]  [32]  [33]  Many of Bachchan's films in this first episode have not done much, but that is about to change. [34]

    Awareness of stardom (1973–1974)

Bachchan and wife  Jaya Bhaduri Bachchan  in 2013; the couple married in 1973, following the release of Zanjeer  .
Bachchan struggled, seen as a "failed newborn" who, at 30, had twelve flops and only two hits (as a Bombay lead  in Goa  and supporting the role of  Anand  ). Bachchan was soon discovered by screenwriter duo  Salim-Javed  , starring  Salim Khan  and  Javed Akhtar  . [35] Salim Khan wrote the story, screenplay and script of  Zanjeer  (1973), and conceived the "angry young" persona in the lead role. Javed Akhtar came on board as co-writer,  [36]  and  Prakash Mehra, who saw the script as potentially groundbreaking, said the film's director. However, they struggled to find an actor for the lead "angry young man" role; it has been moved by a number of actors, in this case against the "romantic hero" image that dominated the industry of the time. [35]  Salim-Javed soon discovered Bachchan and "saw his talent, which many did not. He was amazing, a genius actor in bad films." [37]  According to Salim Khan, they "strongly felt that Amitabh was the ideal rejection of  Zanjeer  ". [35] Salim Khan introduced Bachchan to Prakash Mehra,  [36]  and Salim-Javed insisted that Bachchan be transferred for the role. [35]
Zanjeer was  a  crime film  with violent  actions  ,  [35]  contrary to the  romantically themed films  that before, and it established Amitabh in a new persona - the "angry young man" in Bollywood cinema. [38]  He got the first  Filmfare Award nomination   for  Best Actor  , the  Filmfare  later regarded as one of the more iconic performances in the history of Bollywood. [34] The film was a huge success and one of the highest grossing films of the year, breaking Bachchan's dry spell at the box office and turning it into a star. [39] This was the first of many collaborations between Salim-Javed and Amitabh Bachchan; Salim-Javed wrote most of their successive Bachchan-minded scripts for the lead role, and forced him to drop for their later films, including blockbusters like  Deewaar  (1975) and  Sholay  (1975). [37]  Salim Khan also introduced Bachchan to director  Manmohan Desai  that he formed a long and successful association, along with Prakash Mehra and Yash Chopra  . [36]  Eventually, Bachchan became one of the most successful leading men in the film industry. Bachchan's portrayal of the wrong hero who fought in a crooked system and the circumstances of the elimination of films like  Zanjeer ,  Deeewar  ,  Trishul  ,  Kaala Patthar  ,  Shakti  , came with it most of the time, most notably young people who create a depressing state of social anxiety such as  poverty  ,  hunger  ,  unemployment  ,  corruption  , social injustice  and the brutality of  The Emergency  . It led to Bachchan's so-called "angry youth", a catchphrase journalism that became a metaphor for bitter anger, resentment, frustration,  rebellion  and the  illusion of  anti-establishment  in a whole generation, as usual in 1970 in India. [40]  [41]  [42]  [43]
It was also 1973 when he married Jaya, and during this time they appeared in many films together: not just  Zanjeer  but in films such as  Abhimaan  , which was released just a month later. at their wedding and also succeeded at the box office. Later, Bachchan played the role of Vikram, once again with Rajesh Khanna, in the film  Namak Haraam  , a social play directed by  Hrishikesh Mukherjee  and scripted by Biresh Chatterjee that deals with the themes of friendship. Her supporting role won her second Filmfare  Best Supporting Actor  award.
In 1974, Bachchan made numerous guest appearances in films such as  Kunwara Baap  and  Dost  , before playing a supporting role in  Roti Kapda Aur Makā  . The film, directed and written by  Manoj Kumar  , deals with themes of honesty in the face of oppression and financial and emotional hardship, and was the lead film of 1974. Then Bachchan played a leading role in film  Majboor  . The film was a box office success. [44]

    Superstardom (1975–1986)

In 1975, he starred in various film genres, from comedy  Chupke Chupke  and crime drama  Faraar  to romantic drama  Mili  . This is also the year in which Bachchan starred in two films that are considered important in the  history of  Hindi cinema  , both written by Salim-Javed, which also insisted on the demise of Bachchan. [37]  The first was  Deewaar  , directed by Yash Chopra, where he worked with  Shashi Kapoor  ,  Nirupa Roy  ,  Parveen Babi  , and  Neetu Singh , and earned another Filmfare nomination for Best Actor. The film became a box office hit in 1975, ranking at number four. [45]  Indiatimes Movies  ranks  Deewaar  among the  Top 25 Must See Bollywood Films  . [46]  The other, dated 15 August 1975 was  Sholay  , who  has made  the highest grossing film  obtained  in India  last time,  [47]  where Bachchan played the role of Jaidev. Deewaar  and  Sholay is frequently recognized by Bachchan's rise to superstardom, two years after he became a star with  Zanjeer  , and consolidated his occupation of the industry in the 1970s and 1980s.  [48]  [49]  In 1999, it was declared on  BBC  India Sholay is  the "Millennial Movie" and, like  Deewar  , has been quoted in  Indiatimes Movies  as one of the  Top 25 Must See Movies in Bollywood Films  . [46]  That year, the judges of the 50th annual Filmfare Awards awarded it a special awards award called the Filmfare Best Film of 50 Years.
In 1976, Yash Chopra rejected him in the family drama  Kabhie Kabhie  . Bachchan stars as a young poet, Amit Malhotra, who falls in love with a beautiful girl named Pooja (  Rakhee Gulzar  ) who ends up marrying another (  Shashi Kapoor  ). The film is famous for portraying Bachchan as a romantic hero, a far cry from his "angry young men" roles such as  Zanjeer  and  Deewar  . The film provoked a great response from critics and audiences alike. Bachchan was also nominated for the Filmfare Best Actor Award for his film role. That year he also played a double role in the hit  Adalat  as father and son. In 1977, he won the first Filmfare Best Actor Award  for his performance in  Amar Akbar Anthony  , in which he played the third lead opposite  Vinod Khanna  and  Rishi Kapoor  as Anthony Gonsalves. The film is the highest grossing film of the year. His other achievements of the year include  Parvarish  and  Khoon Pasina  . [50]
He  also returns for a double role in films such as  Kasme Vaade  (1978) such as Amit and Shankar and  Don  (1978) starring the characters of  Don  , a leader of an underworld gang and his seemingly identical cast. si Vijay. Her performance won her second Filmfare Best Actor Award. He also gave many performances in  Trishul  with Yash Chopra  and  Muqaddar Ka Sikandar Prakash Mehra who  both also earned his nomination for Filmfare Best Actor. 1978 has been considered the most successful year at the box office since all six of its releases in the same year, with  Muqaddar Ka Sikandar  ,  Trishul  ,  Don  ,  Kasme Vaade  , The Ganga Ki Saugandh  and  Besharam  being major successes, the first three being the sequel to the highest grossing films of the year, surprisingly released during each other's months, is a rare match in theaters. [51]  [52]  [53]
Back in 1979, Bachchan topped  Suhaag  as the highest earner of the year. That same year he also enjoyed critical acclaim and commercial success in films like  Mr. Natwarlal  ,  Kaala Patthar  ,  The Great Gambler  and  Manzil  . Amitabh had to use his voice to sing for the first time in a song from Mr. Natwarlal 's movie   where he had dinner with  Rekha  . Bachchan's performance in the film saw him nominated for both the Filmfare Best Actor Award and the Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer  . He also received the Best Actor nomination for  Kaala Patthar and was subsequently nominated in 1980 for  Raj Khosla  directed by the film  Dostana  , where he starred  alongside Shatrughan Sinha  and  Zeenat Aman  . Dostana proved to be   the top-grossing film in 1980.  [54] In 1981,  he starred in Yash Chopra's melodrama film  Silsila , in which he starred alongside his wife Jaya and also Rekha. Other successful films of this period include  Shaan  (1980),  Ram Balram (1980),  Naseeb  (1981),  Lawaaris  (1981),  Kaalia  (1981),  Yaarana  (1981),  Barsaat Ki Ek Raat ( 1981) and  Shakti (1982), also starred by  Dilip Kumar  .
In 1982, he played a double role in the musical  Satte Pe Satta  and  action  drama  Desh Premee  succeeded at the box office with the mega hits like  action  comedy  ,  Namak Halaal  ,  drama,  action  Khud-Daar  and the critically acclaimed  Bemisal drama   . [55]  In 1983, he played a triple role in  Mahaan  without success like his previous films. [56]  Other releases that year included  Nastik  , Andha Kanoon  (where she has a guest appearance) hits and  Pukar an average grosser  [57] During a political period from 1984 to 1987, his completed films  Mard  (1985) and  Aakhree Raasta  (1986) were released with major hits. [58]

    The  damage  coolie  (1982-1983)

On July 26, 1982, while  working for Coolie  , at the University Campus in Bangalore, Bachchan suffered a severe intestinal injury while filming a fight scene with fellow actor  Puneet Issar  . [59]  Bachchan made his own movie plays and a scene required him to fall to a table and then to the ground. However, as he jumped onto the table, the corner of the table hit his stomach, resulting in a  splenic rupture  from which he lost a lot of blood. He needed an emergency  splenectomyand remained critical of the hospital for months, sometimes dying. His most public response included prayers at the temples and offers at the sacrifice of arms to save him, while later, there were long queues for fans outside the hospital where he was again. [60]
However, he resumed filming later in the year after a long time. The film was released in 1983, and in part due to the huge publicity in the Bachchan accident, the film was a box office success and top-grossing film of the year. [61]
The director,  Manmohan Desai  , changed Coolie's termination   following Bachchan's accident. Bachchan's character was originally intended to be executed but after the script was changed, the character came to life. It is not appropriate, says Desai, for the person facing death in real life killed inside. Likewise, in the released film the footage of the fight in the adventure has changed at a critical moment, and a caption has appeared onscreen marking this immediate injury to the actor and the aftermath of the publicity of the accident. [62]
Shortly after, he was diagnosed with  Myasthenia gravis  . His illness made him mentally and physically weak and he decided to quit the movies and pursue politics. During this time he became a pessimist, expressing concern over how a new film would be received, and recounting before each release, "Yeh to flop hogi!" ("This movie works")  [63]

    Career and Retirement (1988–1992)

After three years of politics from 1984 to 1987, Bachchan returned to films in 1988, playing the title role of  Shahenshah  , a   box office success . [64]  Following the success of his comeback film however, his star power began to improve as all of his subsequent films like  Jaadugar  ,  Toofan  and  Main Azaad Hoon  (all released in 1989) failed. at the box office. The success of this season as  the  crime   drama Aaj Ka Arjun  (1990) and  drama criminal  action  Hum (1991), in which he won his third Filmfare Best Actor Award, as if they could reverse the trend, but this momentum was short-lived and his string of box office failures continued. [65]  [66] Well, despite the lack of hits, during this time Bachchan won his first  National Film Award for Best Actor  for his performance as a Mafia don in 1990.  cult  film  Agneepath  . These years will see his last on-screen appearances in a long time. Following the release of the critically acclaimed epic  Khuda Gawah in 1992, Bachchan was  elected  to a semi-pension for five years. Besides being delayed by the delayed release of  Insaniyat (1994), which was also a failure in the box office, Bachchan did not show any new releases in five years. [67]

    Productions and moving back

Bachchan became a producer during his temporary retirement, establishing  Amitabh Bachchan Corporation  , Ltd. (ABCL) in 1996. ABCL's strategy is to introduce products and services that cover the entire section of the Indian entertainment industry. ABCL's operations include mainstream commercial film production and distribution, audio cassette and video discs, television production and marketing software, and offer management and management. [68]  Shortly after the company launched in 1996, its first film was  Tere Mere Sapne  ,  which was a modest success and launched the careers of actors like  Arshad Warsi and southern film star  Simran  .
In 1997, Bachchan tried to make his acting  debut with the film  Mrityudata , produced by ABCL. Even  if Mrityudaata  tried   to bring back Bachchan's early success as a hero in action, the film was a financial failure and also critical. [69] ABCL was the main organizer of the  1996 Miss World beauty pageant  ,  Bangalore  , but lost millions. The fiasco and the consequences of the legal battle surrounding ABCL and various entities after the movement, coupled with the fact that ABCL reportedly overpaid most of its top-level managers, eventually led to the destruction of the financial and operations in 1997.  [70]  [71] The company entered into administration and was later declared a failed board company of India Industries. The Bombay high court, in April 1999, prevented Bachchan from selling its Bombay  bungalow  'Prateeksha' and two steps until Canara Bank 's pending withdrawal cases were   abolished. Instead, Bachchan requested that he lend his bungalow to raise funds for his company. [72]
Bachchan tried to revive his acting career, and finally had commercial success with  Bade Miyan Chote Miyan  (1998) and  Major Saab  (1998),  [73]  and received positive reviews for  Sooryavansham  (1999 ),  [74]  but other films like  Lal Baadshah (1999) and  Hindustan Ki Kasam  (1999) were box office failures.

    Back to fame (2000-present)

In 2000, Amitabh Bachchan appeared in the Yash Chopra box-office collision,  Mohabbatein  , which was directed by  Aditya Chopra  . He plays a strict, old-fashioned man who opposes the character of  Shahrukh Khan  . Her role won her the third  Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award  . Other hits followed, with Bachchan appearing as an old family patriarch in  Ek Rishtaa: The Bond of Love (2001),  Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham ...  (2001) and  Baghban  (2003). As an actor, he continues to cast in a variety of characters, receiving critical acclaim for his performances in  Aks  (2001),  Aankhen  (2002),  Kaante  (2002), Khakee(2004) and  Dev  (2004). His performance in  Aks  won him his first  Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actor  .
One project that works well for Bachchan is  Sanjay Leela Bhansali  's  Black  (2005). The film stars Bachchan as an elderly teacher of a deaf child and follows their relationship. Her performance has been widely praised by critics and audiences and won her the second National Film Award for Best Actor, her fourth Filmfare Best Actor Award and her second Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actor. To capitalize on the revival, Amitabh has launched a range of products and services, which appear in numerous television and billboard advertisements. In 2005 and 2006, he starred with his son Abhishek in films Bunty Aur Babli  (2005), the  Godfather  tribute  Sarkar  (2005), and Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna  (2006). They were all successful at the box office. [75]  [76] His later releases in 2006 and early 2007 were  Baabul  (2006),  [77]  Ekalavya  and  Nishabd  (2007), who failed to do well in the box office but his accomplishments in each one of them was praised by critics. [78]
In May 2007, two of his films: the romantic comedy  Cheeni Kum  and the multi-starrer action drama  Shootout in Lokhandwala were released. The Lokhandwala Shootout performed well at   the box office and was declared a hit in India, while  Cheeni Kum  took over after a slow start and a breakthrough. [79]  [80]  [81]  [82]  A remake of his greatest hit,  Sholay  (1975), entitled  Ram Gopal Varma Ki aag , was released in August of that year, and proved to be a major commercial failure in addition to its poor critical reception. [82]  The year also marked Bachchan's first appearance in an English-language film, Rituparno Ghosh  's  The Last Lear  , co-starring  Arjun Rampal  and  Preity Zinta  . The film was premiered at the  2007 Toronto International Film Festival  on September 9, 2007. She received positive reviews from critics who praised her performance as the best from  Black  . [83] Si Bachchan is set to play a supporting role in his first international film,  Shantaram  , directed by  Mira Nair  and  directed  by Hollywood actor  Johnny Depp  . The film began filming in February 2008 but due to the author's strike, it was pushed until September 2008.  [84] The film is now "on the shelf" forever. [85]
Vivek Sharma  's  Bhoothnath  , in which he played the title role as a ghost, was released on May 9, 2008.  Sarkar Raj  , the sequel to the 2005 film  Sarkar  , was released in June 2008 and received a positive response to the box office. Paa  , released at the end of 2009 is a much anticipated project because he saw her playing with her own son Abhishek's Progeria-affected 13-year-old son, and it has opened to favorable reviews, especially. in Bachchan filming and one of the highest-grossing films in 2009.  [86] This won him the third National Film Award for Best Actor and the fifth Filmfare Best Actor Award. In 2010, he posted the  Malayalam film  through  Kandahar , directed by  Major Ravi  and co-starring  Mohanlal  . [87] The film is based on the hijacking incident on  Indian Airlines Flight 814  . [88]  Bachchan declined any wages for this film. [89]
In 2013 he made his Hollywood debut in  The Great Gatsby  making a special appearance opposite  Leonardo DiCaprio  and  Tobey Maguire  . In 2014, he played the role of a friendly ghost  step  next  Bhoothnath Returns  . The following year, he played the role of a ferocious father suffering from severe  concealment  in the critically acclaimed  Piku  which was also a major hit in 2015.  [90]  [91]  [92]  A review in the  Daily News and Analysis(The DNA) completes Bachchan's performance as "The heart and soul of Piku clearly belongs to Amitabh Bachchan who is in his elements. His performance in Piku, unfortunately, has found a place among the top 10 in his bad career. " [93]  Rachel Saltz writes for  The New York Times , "" Piku, "an offbeat comedy in Hindi, would you like to think about the intestines and deaths of a Bhashkor Banerji and the actor who played him, Amitabh Bachchan. revolve around his constipation and fussy hypochondria, but there is nothing wrong with the intense scene-stealing energy provided by Mr. Bachchan, India's Angry Young Man, mustaches for his new role in Cranky Old Man. "  [94]Famous Indian critic Rajeev Masand wrote on his website, "Bachchan is a bit of a disaster as Bhashkor, reminding you of the oddball uncle that he still has a soft spot for. He is a bicker to girls, offers up his helpless helper, and expects Piku to remain unmarried so he can go to her.
